As a college student, you probably no longer qualify for coverage under your parents’ insurance policy, and now is the time to invest in your own insurance policy. Students that have tuition and boarding fees to think of can enroll in a college student health insurance plan. This type of insurance is made for your limited financial capacity at this point in your life.

Many surveys show that about 30 percent of college students in the United States (about 4 million) do not have any type of health insurance. When they suddenly need medical care, they either have to pay from their own savings or ask their parents for subsidy. The same surveys indicate that students without any form of health insurance were more likely to drop out of college for financial reasons. They have to work immediately to pay off their medical bills.

Check with the student services office at your college and university if they partner with health care providers that offer health packages within your means. If you do not have the funds to readily cover the premiums, ask if you can apply for a few extra hundred dollars in student loans to cover the fee.

If your school does not offer health insurance, you can go to the local hospital and ask if you can qualify for income-based health insurance. Almost all cities these days provide health care facilities that are structured for individuals who cannot afford regular health insurance rates. They compute your income and adjust your premiums accordingly. As a college student, you will probably pay almost nothing or only the minimum. These inexpensive health insurance packages are enough to cover the basics such as yearly check-ups, birth control, and basic medicines.
